MATTERS OF THE HEART

What Is the Best Debt-Free Advice?

One of the greatest keys to becoming debt free is learning the difference between needs, wants, and the desires of the heart.

Jeremiah 17:9 says:

“The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure. Who can understand it?”

The answer is found in Romans 8:27:

“…He who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for God’s people in accordance with the will of God.”

God understands our hearts even when we do not fully understand ourselves.

So, what do you truly value? What is your heart’s desire? What do you love most—material possessions, status, recognition, or the approval of others?

In 1 Timothy 6:10, we are reminded that: “The love of money is a root of all kinds of evil.”

Paul was warning believers not to allow financial pursuits to replace spiritual priorities. According to Matthew Henry’s commentary, some people attempted to use religion as a means of gaining worldly advantage and satisfying secular desires. Yet the true lesson Paul teaches is found in 1 Timothy 6:6:

“Godliness with contentment is great gain.”

This teaching stands in sharp contrast to society’s definition of success. The world often measures success by wealth, popularity, power, position, and material accomplishments. Society teaches us to pursue more, acquire more, and compare ourselves to others.

But God measures success differently.

An article by Jeff Haden states, “The happier you are, the more successful you are.” While happiness may come and go based on circumstances, biblical joy is rooted in faith, peace, and trust in God.

In Matthew 6:33, Jesus tells us:

“Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.”

What were “these things”? Jesus had just taught the people not to worry about food, clothing, or daily necessities. The people living under Roman rule were heavily taxed, discouraged, and struggling simply to survive. Many longed for freedom, relief, and hope.

Yet Jesus redirected their focus away from earthly treasures and toward eternal ones. He reminded them that their Heavenly Father already knew their needs and would faithfully provide for them.

The pagans chased after possessions and worldly gain, but Jesus taught that God’s people were to live by faith and trust in His provision.

So, what do we learn from this?

  • The heart can be deceptive.

  • The love of money can lead us away from God.

  • God knows our hearts and our true needs.

  • The world defines success through wealth and status.

  • God defines success through faithfulness, contentment, and obedience.

  • When we seek God first, He promises to provide what we truly need.

The best debt-free advice is not simply about budgeting better—it is about surrendering our hearts to God, learning contentment, and becoming faithful stewards of what He has entrusted to us.
